John Philip Sousa and The HarpBeats

Did you know that American bandleader, John Philip Sousa, endorsed the harmonica?

Sousa was quoted on the insides of harmonica instrument boxes and advertisements across the country stating, "This instrument is the foundation for a musical career...and many boys and girls who are now learning music on the harmonica will step into the great symphony orchestras and bands of our country some day."

Did you know that Sousa wrote a march for the harmonica?

In 1930 the American band leader, John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), wrote a piece for harmonica band, titled The Harmonica Wizard. Paul E. Bierley, the author of The Works of John Philip Sousa, wrote, "Leading a harmonica band was a novel experience for Sousa when he was invited to conduct Albert N. Hoxie's fifty-two member Philadelphia harmonica band in September 1925. He was so impressed with their playing and the possibilities of the harmonica that he carried an endorsement for Hohner harmonicas in his 1928 programs and subsequently wrote this march for Hoxie's boys: The Harmonica Wizard. When the Sousa band came to Philadelphia on November 21, 1930 the mayor proclaimed the day: Sousa Day.

"Among other events was Sousa's leading the University of Pennsylvania band, but the climax of the day was when Hoxie's boys came to the stage during the Sousa band concert and performed the new march Sousa had written for them. A special commemorative medal with the emblem of the Philadelphia Harmonica Band on one side and a tribute to Sousa on the other was presented to the march king at the close of the concert."

Buckeye Harmonica Festival 2010 ~ April 29, 30, & May 1, 2010

Phil and George will be in attendance all three days. You'll find us playing and jamming about the hallways, plus you'll see and hear the Friday night debut performance of the new HarpBeats.

We all thought that the (33rd annual) Buckeye Harmonica Festival 2009 was at the end of its run. However, thanks to the The Rubber Capital Harmonica Club (Akron Ohio) with the assistance of the Buckeye State Harmonica Club (Columbus Ohio), BHF will continue to go on! BSHC had hosted the festival in Columbus for its first 33 years, and now RCHC will host BHF 2010 in Akron, which was once America's tire capital. RCHC has a rich history for harmonica festivals themselves-Hilton-Quaker Square Mall in the spring, and St. John's Episcopal Church in the fall. George attended many of the RCHC festivals between the late 70's and mid-80's.

The Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica held its 45th annual international convention in St. Louis MO, August 12-16 at the Sheraton Westport Chalet, and was hosted by the Gateway Harmonica Club of St. Louis.

There were 400 registered attendees. Thanks to JP, here are some photos and more photos depicting the events, seminars, open mic sessions, hall way jam sessions. A good time was had by all.

We had fun with all of the folks at Buckeye! We enjoyed meeting you all in the halls of the University Plaza Hotel and playing harmonica with you along the way.
